Alan Sher, a retired button magnate, buys 350 acres of land in West Palm Beach. The appropriate use for this inviting Eden, he was sure, was a golf course. Sher names his project Ironhorse, enjoying the way it combines the word for a golf club with the name of the animal that inspired his first visit to the ranch. Amtrak passenger trains passed along the railroad tracks at the north end of the property several times a day. He designs a logo with a stylized locomotive rolling out above a giant horseshoe, a pair of crossed irons rampant on the nose of its steam tank. Sher hires Arthur Hills, an imaginative golf course architect, to design the course. The construction and shaping of the landscape slowly evolve into a golf course. The rains hold off, the greens mature beautifully, and Ironhorse becomes a reality.
